MacBook Air (2010-2015): Replacing the battery (tutorial)
At the latest when the Macbook Air battery issues the warning “Replace now”, there is a need for action and it is time for a new battery. If you have your battery replaced at your nearest Apple Retail Store or Apple Service Provider (ASP), Apple is calling for an impressive 139 EUR. However, since new batteries of equivalent quality are now available on the market from third-party suppliers and the battery can be replaced in just a few simple steps, battery replacement is possible at half the cost within 10 minutes.

Frequently asked questions
What tools do I need to install the new battery?
MacBook Air requires a special Pentalobe screwdriver to open the case. However, this is already supplied with the battery linked in the article. Two screwdrivers (Torx T-5 and Pentalobe) are included to open the chassis.
Does Apple’s warranty remain in effect?
No. Apple does not plan to replace the battery independently. However, if the device is no longer within the one-year manufacturer’s warranty, you can easily replace the MacBook battery yourself.

Preparation
Even if it may sound a little exaggerated for a battery replacement, it is recommended to save all data and settings before a hardware conversion. (e.g. using TimeMachine). Once this is complete, MacBook Air can now be shut down. Disconnect the power plug and other cables and place on a soft surface with the top side facing down.
Safety Recommendation
In principle, it is recommended to wear an antistatic wrist strap when working within reach of electronic components. This protects against electrostatic charging and prevents possible damage to electrical components in the Macbook. The wristband is striped over the arm and has a cable with a kroro clip, which is simply clamped to the radiator. Corresponding bracelets are already available for a few dollars (e.g. Rosewill ESD Wrist Strap).
Installation guide
Basically the replacement of the battery is quite easy. As always, it is important to take enough time and proceed carefully. The following YouTube video explains the battery replacement very clearly:
Calibrating the battery
To reach the full capacity of the battery, the battery must be “calibrated” by completely discharging and recharging it three times.
- Fully (!) charge the battery
- Remove the charging cable and work on the Macbook until the battery is discharged to approx. 7%.
- Fully recharge the battery
- Repeat this procedure 3-4
